Kai-Uwe Denker is by most accounts an unusual individual. Many a time the story has been told (true or not) of Denker’s response to people who show up at his booth at a hunting convention. Mind you, Denker is there to sell hunts, so one has to wonder his motivation in the following situation: An overweight man shows up at Denker’s booth and asks the price of a hunt, whereupon Denker answers, “Do you think you are going hunting with me with that body?” This has happened on more than one occasion. We are also told he lives in Namibia without a phone and running water. It might be fair to state that civilization has passed the Denker household by, and they seem all the better for it. Whatever his idiosyncrasies, Denker is a passionate elephant hunter, and he knows his trade because in the last ten years he has produced more hundred-pounders than any other PH in Africa. His domain is the vast hinterlands of Namibia, completely wild and with no signs of civilization; in addition, there is hunting in Zimbabwe, Tanzania, and a self-guided hunt in the rain forest of the Cameroon. It is obvious Denker has a passion for his land, the Bushmen trackers whom he hunts with, and the great game that walks in the far corners of his part of Africa. It shines through in the text, and it is apparent in all the chapters he has written for this tome. He tells an amusing story of a rogue and completely gone-wild Bushman equally well, and he describes what it is like to cross the thirstlands in search of game. Originally written in German, the text has a certain Teutonic flavor that is both charming and makes the book all the more interesting to read. Yes, he is proud of his book, hence the price but many people tell us it is worth the read. |
