Vintage Arms - Antique Rifles and Fowlers -

Mortimer, London- 16-Bore Double Flinklock Fowler, ca. 1885

Price: EUR 14500,-
Sold out
H. W. Mortiimer, nice early 16-bore double flintlock fowler, ca. 1885. Weight 7 1/4 lbs. 14 1/4" LOP. Very nice 35" Damascus barrels have good bores and retain most of an old rebrown finish. Left breech has the original gold touch-hole liner and right breech has a later platinum liner. Both breechs with gold inlaid bands show no significant wear or corrosion. Superb, mechanically perfect, locks of the highest quality have fancy bridles and internal parts retain much of the original blue finish. Mounts with no original finish are nicely engraved with the trigger guard bow bearing what is most likely a portrait of the maker in full hunting array. Nicely figured stock with steel butt plate over a period wood extension. Good condition original maker's case with rare early trade label and original coarse baize lining typical of the period. Many original accessories. Harvey Walklate Mortimer was born on 13 March 1753 and started his business at 89 Fleet Street before 1783. Prior to 1800 the company was known simply as H.W. Mortimer. From 1800 to 1807 the firm was known as H.W. Mortimer, Son & T. Mortimer, then in 1808 underwent another change to H.W. Mortimer & Son. Overall a fine and rare, perfectly serviceable, English double flint gun by one of the best early maker's.
