Joe Cavanaugh is an unusual man. He has wandered around and lived in Central and South America in pursuit of adventure and unusual game for more than a decade. He has visited and hunted (often with native hunters) in every major South American country from Belize to Columbia and the Amazon Basin to Bolivia. Cavanaugh has hunted all the native game of South America as well as the introduced water buffalo. Whatever he hunted, the excitement of the chase and the jungle were foremost. He has pursued giant tapirs at remote salt licks with native hunters armed with only a shotgun; he has followed jaguar and puma in a canoe and on foot aided with dogs (no book on South America is complete without a good deal on these two large cats); and he has tracked deep into the jungle after tropical white-tailed deer, marsh deer, the shy and elusive brocket, and peccary. His many trips and hunts have allowed him to make observations on all the game of the vast and unexplored continent, including those no longer hunted, such as the spectacled bear, huemul, and pudu. There are some great photographs of animals, natives, and jungles taken against a background of some of the wildest regions left on earth. This well-written book full of adventure is also a thorough and complete work on all the large game animals native to South America by a man with practical, hands-on experience who has been there and done it all. And if you want to ride the rushing Amazon into the wild, this book will tell you how to organize your own expedition—for the most adventure and quite some peril!
