Wattell Clark, Holborn, London. Extremely high quality 14-bore flintlock fowling piece made for Charles Orde, Esq., ca. 1790. Weight: 5 lbs. 6 oz. Stock Dimensions: 13 7/8” LOP. Beautiful 32”, three-stage, Damascus barrel retaining most of an old rebrown finish. Bore measuring .695”(no wear whatever), with minimum wall thickness of .070”, shows a few isolated areas of light frosting but no pitting and is generally bright and untouched. Breech with platinum touch-hole liner and gold inlaid band retains much of the original hardening color with no corrosion whatever. Original ramrod. Superb lock has no original finish but has crisp engraving, not a spec of corrosion (even in the bottom of the pan), and internals are crisp and mechanically absolutely perfect. Frizzen has been properly refaced during the period of use. Beautifully engraved mounts with engraving as sharp as if cut yesterday have been reblacked. Nicely figured walnut half-stock with crisp, untouched, checkering shows no wear. Original maker’s case with proper trade label and many accessories including turnscrews, oil bottle, mainspring clamp, powder flask, and shot charger. The original case lining has some small areas of minor moth damage but is generally in very good condition. Overall a very high quality early flintlock fowler in superb condition and very difficult to find today in this condition. |
