Across the Dark Continent

DVD, running time 1 hour, 30 mins
Ivan Carter is the star of that famous hunting TV segment wherein he shoots a ferociously charging lion in chokingly thick bush-he was so close, in fact, that his shots just about singed the hairs off the cat! He then coolly turns around and quips, "That's why you carry a double rifle."

He is the host (and often guiding PH) of this new film that follows a number of hunters in various African countries. These various hunters pursue buffalo, leopard, crocodile, lion, and elephant, and multiples of each are shot. There are also glamour antelope such as kudu, bushbuck, sable, mountain nyala, gemsbok, and giant eland, but the majority are hunts for the Big Four.

The entire production is set up to move from hunt to hunt, animal to animal, and country to country. The action is rapid, and there are no boring, endless stalks and shots of Toyota 4WDs. All the footage in this high-quality show is fast paced. Countries where the filming took place are the C.A.R., Zimbabwe, South Africa, Tanzania, Mozambique, Ethiopia, and Namibia. While there are no snarling leopard charges or close calls from death-defying buffalo, the movie keeps your attention and gives you a great segment-by-segment view of the best places, the most desirable game, and the finest hunts Africa has to offer in the twenty-first century. It is a well-done production.

Segments that are spoken in whispers are augmented with closed captions. This is a much-welcome feature for those of us who are nitro-ear sufferers. We are still waiting for the hunting DVD industry to offer closed captions for entire films. One would think that surely they could for the prices they charge?

Now that just about all hunting DVDs are shot in HD, it is easy to forget just how good today's footage can be. The sounds, footage, and graphics in this new Ivan Carter DVD are excellent.
