In a Hunters Shadow

African Video, the company that produced this DVD, normally only produces films for private individuals and their safaris. The film quality from this company is so good, however, that for a long time we have asked the producers to release their products commercially. Finally they have agreed to release this one movie, a compilation of some of the best client footage they have shot in the last few years. The camera work, graphics, sound, music, and pace are all excellent. The hunts are set in Botswana, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia, and Mozambique. We see hunts for elephants, lions, hippos, crocs, leopards, buffaloes; all animals listed include multiple on-camera-kills, with the exception of the hippo and the leopard. Several excellent buffaloes are taken, including a huge bull in Zambia. The final lion hunt is superb, with the camera showing the client wounding a lion and the lion charging. The tracking takes place over two days, and head PH Johan Calitz and his team will not give up till the lion makes a stand and attacks the party, which it does in a spectacular fashion.

The DVD consists of a series of short vignettes in many countries for dangerous game only, but we are properly introduced each time to the hunter and the location via screen text. The action on the screen is fast paced, and the movie has none of the jerking of hither to yon we so dislike in hunting DVDs. This DVD is well worth the money.
