James Purdey, London, best 12ga. rebounding sidelock bar-in-wood hammer gun, ca. 1882. Weight: 6 1/2 lbs. 14 1/2"x 1 1/4"x 2 1/4"x 1/8" cast-off. Superb 30" Whitworth Steel barrels with 2 1/2" chambers nitro-proofed at .740" with current bore diameters of .744"/.743". Mirror bores choked .015"/.028" with minimum wall thickness .025"/.028". 95% brilliant black finish present on barrels with crisp engraving. Highly desirable bar-in-wood action and typical peerless quality rebounding hammer bar action sidelocks are fully engraved and are clean and sharp but have no original hardening color. Very nice straight grip stock and splinter forend in fine condition with all the finish and no proud metal. Old Silver's butt pad remains in fine condition. Double triggers and extractors. Overall tight, dead-on-the-face, and mechanically perfect. Comes in a nice period case with trade label and a Purdey factory letter. |
