Books on West and Central Africa are, in our opinion, some of the most interesting in all of African hunting literature because the hunters had to endure conditions often much more difficult than elsewhere on the continent. In West Cameroon the author was asked to shoot a man-killing elephant. From this start, he became a PH and started guiding in Cameroon, east and west as well as north and south. This fascinating read takes us on hunts for an elephant with a corkscrew tusk, a rogue gorilla, and a bullfrog that weighed about ten pounds—no kidding! After leaving Cameroon, Grasselli settled in Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) where he remained till just before that country’s independence. There we find him in pursuit of a huge tusked elephant, one that we did not think existed in Zimbabwe, as well as magnificent lion. Then, in the third part of the book, Grasselli arrives in the C.A.R. in 1979 where he devotes his time to the pursuit of large tuskers, eland, and bongo; there’s even a story on the capture of live giant eland. Finally, we land up in Zambia where the author hunts once again for glamour game such as sable and buffalo. The stories are not kill and kill some more, but rather they are the highlights of a most fascinating life—one that comes from living and hunting for decades in various countries throughout Africa. An interesting read. Despite the photo on the dust jacket, the book is all about rifle hunting and not about bow hunting.
