James Purdey, London, best lightweight 12ga. hammer gun, ca. 1886. Weight: 6 lbs.15 oz. Stock dimensions: 14"x 1 1/2"x 2 1/2"x 1/8" cast-off. Original 31" Whitworth Steel barrels with 2 1/2" chambers, brilliant bores (.745"/.743"), choked .009"/.029", and minimum wall thickness of .023"/.025". Nicely engraved action with best Purdey bar action, rebounding hammer, side locks. Typical Purdey hidden third fastener which is a real plus on this early gun. Highly figured pistol grip stock with 1/2" wood butt extension under a 1/2" horn butt plate. A second straight grip stock accompanies the gun. This gun was just sent to Nick Makinson for evaluation and possible sleeving but he felt the barrels were fine and a letter from him to that effect accompanies the gun. Overall refinished but tight and on-the-face. |
