W. & C. Scott, London, rare "Excellentia" Grade 8ga. water fowler, ca. 1884 - 1888. Weight 12 1/2 lbs. 14 3/8 " LOP. 34" nickel plated Damascus steel barrels with good bores. Beautifully engraved "Triplex" sidelock action with no original finish and showing some wear. Nickel plating was occasionally applied to the barrels of these big water fowlers during the late 19th century to help combat the corrosive salt marsh environment, however, the practice must not have been very commonplace as these guns are not often encountered today. Overall a good solid tight gun which has seen considerable use. |
