Griffin & Howe, New York, superb custom, 1903 Springfield action, sporting rifle in .270 cal. and stocked by the legendary Tom Shelhamer. Weight 9 1/2 lbs. 13 7/8" LOP. Beautifully tapered 23" round Douglas barrel with absolutely mint bore. Buttery smooth, jeweled action with G&H quick detachable mounts and classic 4X Stith scope which is still an excellent scope even by today's rigid standards. Deluxe Canjar trigger. Absolutely flawlessly stocked by the incomparable Tom Shelhamer with steel butt plate and trap door compartment for storing the Lyman 48 rear sight with which the gun is also equipped. Overall this American classic is in virtually mint condition and is, quite literally, a tack driver. Just a brief comment on Tom Shelhamer as a gun stocker, and I can think of no one better to quote than expert Dave Brennan, Editor of "Precision Shooting" and "The Accurate Rifle". "The irascible Edward C. Crossman, writing in his 1931 masterpiece The Book of the Springfield, said that there were three great stockmaker's in his day... Thomas Shelhamer, Bob Owen, and Alvin Linden... and felt that he needed to say no more on the topic. No one chose to argue with him at the time; Captain E. C. (Ned) Crossman had a short fuse for fools who wanted to debate the obvious. Not very democratic, but certainly kept down the senseless chatter at times. One has to wonder how captain Crossman would handle the verbal dribble so commonplace on today's website bulletin boards". |
