Hunting the Spiral Horns: Bushbuck

Peter Flack
The Little Big Buck
Precio: EUR 104,-
2014 Johannesburg, 384pp, photos
Encuadernación: 8.x11, hardcover, dj
This is the definitive work on hunting nine of the eleven bushbuck subspecies available on license currently in Africa, written by some of the hunting world's top professional and amateur hunters. Shoan and Somali bushbuck are not available on license but are referred to for historical purposes. To this end, a number of experienced bushbuck hunters-some twenty-five in all-wrote brand new chapters to the book. These hunters read like the who's who of bushbuck hunting and include such icons of the hunting world as Irvin Barnhart, Don Cowie, Kai-Uwe Denker, Brian Herne, Jeff Rann, Tony Tomkinson, and Coenraad Vermaak, to name but a few.

While in-depth research on bushbucks is the hallmark of this book, there are significant other chapters as well. There's a chapter on "how to" hunt these incredible animals as well as exciting accounts of successes and failures in the hunt for this, the most pugnacious and aggressive of all the spiral horns. Chapter titles include: Rifles and Cartridges for Bushbuck in Thick Cover, Dangerous Encounters, Hunting Super Rams, Driven Hunts, and Clothing and Equipment. Then there are the lessons that have been sourced from legendary African hunters of yesteryear such as Abel Chapman, Cornwallis Harris, Gordon Cumming, Vaughan Kirby, Denis Lyell, Philip Percival, and others.

The book is complemented by outstanding photographs provided by the contributors as well as professional and amateur photographers and friends. Altogether, this 384-page book hosts some 450 color photographs and 33 black and white ones.

In brief, after reading this tome, you will know as much as it is possible to learn from a book about hunting bushbuck-these little, big buck that are the smallest of the spiral horns but also the ones with the most human notches on their daggerlike horns.

This is the third in a five-book series covering the hunting of all members of the spiral horn family. This includes some thirty animals in total if animals that are recognized by both the Rowland Ward and SCI record books are taken into account. This welcome addition to any collection of hunting books will not only provide a worthwhile reference source but will also provide top-quality entertainment for many seasons to come.
