Just Along for the Ride tells the story of the adventurous hunting life of Don Bricker, a heart surgeon from Lubbock, Texas. The title is facetious; Bricker is a tough and enthusiastic go-getter—hardly a passive ride-along—when it comes to his hunting adventures.
The book starts off with a bang as Bricker toughs out his first Alaska sheep hunt, braving long days in the backcountry with a half-crazy old sourdough guide. Despite a busy surgical practice back in Texas, he is irresistibly drawn back to the wilderness again and again, returning to the North Country for brown bear, moose, and eventually polar bear. His world begins to expand with an unforgettable adventure to Kyrgystan for Marco Polo sheep, and soon he begins to get serious about hunting internationally. He makes this happen by putting a trained and trusted staff in place to run his practice, freeing him up to pursue his true passion.
Bricker's first trip to Africa with Botswana's Safari South sparks a love affair with hunting that continent that takes him on subsequent adventures from Namibia to Mozambique and Ethiopia to South Africa. In between, he pursues jaguar in South America, water buffalo in Australia, and ibex in Spain and Turkey. Bricker's love of the outdoors and desire to hunt game all over the world fairly and ethically-and have a lot of fun doing it-comes across in his sprightly, self-deprecating, and often humorous prose.
