Series: Volume 81 in the Safari Press’s Classics in African Hunting Series
Finally, the long awaited and much anticipated "Rhino" book is on its way. Safari Press has agreed to produce Hunting the African Rhino with James Rikhoff, the publisher of Amwell Press. The book will be produced to match the physical appearance of the other four books in the Amwell series (elephant, buffalo, leopard, and lion), thus completing the set as well as making it a matching set with similar binding, paper, and slipcase. As before, Jim Rikhoff will do a special commentary, and as before, Guy Coheleach will do his magnificent color illustrations as well as his incredible pencil drawings of rhinos.

The African rhino has sadly taken a huge hit in recent times, but there was a time, which extended well past World War II, when rhinos were incredibly plentiful. In fact, when Theodore Roosevelt proceeded from Nairobi on foot into the interior of Kenya in 1909, rhinos had to be shot repeatedly because they attacked the caravan and knocked over and sometimes even killed the porters. Later, John Hunter was paid to clear out hundreds of black rhinos from the Makueni district in Kenya in the 1930s. Imagine being paid to shoot rhinos while currently permits for the same animal go for hundreds of thousands of dollars!

As with the other books in this series, the book will be divided into four parts, starting with the very earliest written records of rhino encounters in the English language and then continuing through three more sections with progressively more modern rhino-hunting stories. Some of the greatest names in the annals of African big-game hunting will grace the pages of this book: Henry Stanley, A. Blayney Percival, Theodore Roosevelt, Fred Kirby, Jack O'Connor, John Batten, Elgin Gates, Edison Marshall, Bunny Allen, Dean Witter, Soren Lindstrom, Finn Aagaard, and many others.

We know that some customers may have ordered this book from Amwell Press years ago. Please understand that Safari Press is not Amwell Press, but because Safari Press has a reputation of sterling customer service, we always do our utmost to accommodate our customers. In order to assist those of you who may have ordered a copy of the rhino book from Amwell Press, we will do the following: If you own the first four of the Amwell Big Five set and have matching numbers, we will sell you a matching number to go with your set. We will ask you to submit Xerox or scanned copies of the limitation pages of the books you have should a dispute arise over a particular number.

If you want a matching number, clearly state so with your order. We will keep a ledger with all numbers assigned. As mentioned, should there be conflict, we will contact you and ask you to submit a copy of the limitation page for each of your four books. PLEASE do NOT ask for specific numbers UNLESS you have A COMPLETE SET OF FOUR with the same number; we will not honor requests if you have less than four matching numbers. *Nota Bene: We know many customers love to secure specific numbers on limited editions that reflect calibers-458, 470, 416, and so on-but PLEASE DO NOT ASK FOR A NUMBER unless you have a set of four with that same number. All customers requesting caliber numbers WILL IMMEDIATELY BE ASKED to submit proof of ownership of that number for the other four books BY SUBMITTING A XEROX COPY OF THE LIMITATION PAGE OF EACH OF THE OTHER FOUR BOOKS. No proof-no assignment!
