Written in English and Spanish, this book by Weatherby Award winner Robert Speegle is the account of two of his most memorable hunts: his 1976 hunt in Tibet for Tibetan argali and his 1984 hunt for markhor in Pakistan. In addition, there are hunts for Spanish ibex and Spanish red stag, but the two Asian hunts are the mainstay of the book. The Tibetan hunt is a unique endeavor; only James Mellon, Lit Ng, Art Carlsberg, and a very few other intrepid souls have hunted and shot the Tibetan argali, which is the specimen Bob Speegle got on his 1976 hunt. And what a specimen! It is the biggest head listed in the SCI record book in its category, and it has kept that position since it was entered because the unstable situation in Tibet has prevented other sportsmen from hunting there. And Speegle hunted this mother-of-all-sheep the old fashioned way: He walked in and hunted for weeks-game was decidedly sparse and shy-but in the end he prevailed in this totally self-guided adventure. In addition to the argali, he also got a blue sheep and a Ladak urial.
For the 1984 hunt in the Chitral Grol area of Pakistan, Speegle was lucky to obtain one of only two markhor permits issued that year. Markhor hunts are among the most demanding in the entire world; the mountains are steep, ice covered, treacherous, and at times deadly to negotiate. Taking a markhor takes skill, patience, and some luck. In the end all the elements came together for Speegle.
Since the launch of his book, half the edition has sold out. Safari Press has agreed to distribute A Hunting Life to the English speaking market, but our copies are limited. If you are a sheep hunter and like unusual hunting destinations, this book is for you. |
