SOME LIONS I HAVE MET

It amazes us that one PH should be able to rack up such an incredible amount of experience on lions, but Gordon has done it—and with flair, style, and then some. One time he had a client out with a fellow PH in Mozambique and the client had shot a nice bull buffalo. When the client and the PH came back later in the day to collect the trophy, they found a pride of lions sitting on the buffalo. In the panic that ensued, the client snapped off a hasty shot that was deemed to have hit the lion but not in a deadly place. Neither PH nor client were very experienced and were rather reluctant to enter the long grass. Their solution? They flattened the vegetation surrounding the dead bull and the wounded lion with the safari car, and when they still did not find the lion they decided to set fire to the grass to smoke the lion out! These heroes then positioned themselves downwind . . . resulting in one client and one PH badly choked on smoke and one long-since dead lion with a badly singed mane! This is just one of the many tales that Gordon recalls on hunting the African lion.
