So who is Col Allison, and what is this book about? Allison is an Australian journalist and hunter who has authored several books on hunting Down Under and elsewhere. This large book, with color pictures on coated paper, is on Africa, and it is divided into three parts: The first is a history of the continent as it was, and it includes tales of the hunters of old such as John Taylor, Walter Bell, Alfred Neumann, William Baldwin, etc. (As an aside, Col Allison knew fellow Australian John Dawkins, who, in turn, knew John “Pondoro” Taylor and hunted with him in the 1950s. There is, sadly, only a tiny snippet about what Dawkins told Allison about Taylor in this book.)

In the second part, Allison records his South African hunting trip in 1981 with famous PH Gary Kelly. There he hunts kudu, nyala, buffalo, gemsbok, eland, and so on. Then in the last segment, Allison travels to Zimbabwe where PH Alan Lowe guides him to bushbuck, waterbuck, bushpig, hippo, buffalo, sable, elephant, and leopard. Allison is a good writer and the text flows.

While some might say that the countries where Allison hunted may not be considered as exciting as, say, Ethiopia or the C.A.R., that matters little because the narrative is so good—it is the narrative that makes this book so worthwhile. In the back of the book is a fitting epilogue on Alan Lowe, who was killed by an elephant in 1989.

We have only one small batch of these books. Once sold, they are gone!
