One of the ironies of the hunting world is that, by the time many hunters have enough money and time to go on long, expensive hunts, they feel they are too old to do so. William R. “Dr. Bill” Pritchard, however, blows this assumption out of the water. His new book, Mzee Never Miss, is subtitled “How to do the hard hunts in your 60s, 70s, and 80s,” and Pritchard has done just that, going on numerous mountain sheep hunts and tackling the toughest African hunts after reaching seventy years of age.
Healthy eating habits and a strict, never-miss regimen of regular daily exercise are Pritchard’s secret weapons. Like many older people, he suffers from health problems, but he has never let those problems slow him down, and he once hunted giant eland just six months after undergoing triple bypass surgery.
This background alone would make the hunting stories in this book interesting, but Pritchard’s collection of hunting adventures are fascinating on their own. Included are stories of fourteen African hunts including quests for the Big Five and all nine spiral-horned antelopes, including challenging hunts for giant eland, bongo, and mountain nyala. He took all of these hunts in some of Africa’s greatest wilderness areas, and his many years of hunting experience proved invaluable. African trackers who were impressed with his shooting ability on an elephant hunt gave him a nickname to be proud of: "Mzee Never Miss." |
