The first volume in a definitive three-part series. The British Shotgun 1850-1870 is an attempt to trace, as accurately as possible, the evolution of the shotgun during its formative years in Great Britain. Some of the developments of the period are known solely from the records of the patent office, others are mentioned in writings of the time, and both these sources have been extensively and painstakingly researched and quoted from by the authors. In addition, great emphasis has been placed on the study of actual guns, both from the authors' own collections and from those of their many friends who have made their treasures available for inspection. Where possible, the authors have shot with the guns concerned, thereby gaining valuable insight into the practical developments that took place during this innovative period.
The work is lavishly illustrated with over 200 photographs and line drawings of whole and stripped guns, patent drawings, contemporary advertisements, portraits and steel engravings. |
