Morison- 16-Bore English Flintlock Fowler, ca. 1790

Price: EUR 7500,-
Sold out
Morison best 16-bore single barrel English flintlock fowler, ca. 1790. Wt. 5-1/2 Ibs. 14-5/8" x 1-3/8" x 2-3/8" x st. Beautiful 39" swamped Spanish Damascus barrel with fine bore, silver spider front sight and typical fancy wedding band at transition between octagonal and round. Also nice original gold inlays at muzzle, wedding band and breech. Sunken gold breech poincon reads "Morison Patent" and an identical poincon is found on the lock plate. It should be noted that the Spanish and Portuguese barrels of a century or more earlier were considered superior to period English barrels and if someone was fortunate enough to come by one of these "antique" barrels in 1790, it was commonplace to have a Best English gun built around that barrel -- quite a testament to the mastery of the 17th century Spanish workers. English lock with flat lock plate, gooseneck cock, rainproof pan and roller frizzen spring is of the highest quality and is mechanically perfect. No corrosion whatsoever in pan. Iron mounts are beautifully engraved with hanging game and a bird dog and show no wear or corrosion whatsoever. Unusual, highly figured bird's eye maple half stock with horn forend cap is in fine condition. Overall a rare and striking early fowler in fine original flint condition.
