The period 1850 to 1900 was an era in which the most far-reaching changes in the designs to sporting guns and rifle occurred. Prior to this, changes had been pedestrian. In 1850 the muzzleloader still ruled the day as it had done for previous centuries. In this major work the author details the many changes that occurred. He thoroughly describes the developments in pinfire, centerfire, and hammerless rifles and discusses all the ancillary changes made to sporting guns. He outlines many developments that occurred with the rifles of that era including the superseding of the two groove, muzzle-loading Express rifle by the multi-groove, breech-loading rifle of smaller caliber.
