Filming fair-chase sheep hunting anywhere is difficult, and doing it in Alaska is surely among the hardest. So this is not a film with the world’s best footage taken from different angles with two cameras. But it is a quality DVD that shows what it is like hunting in the Wrangells, Chugach, Brooks and Alaska Ranges for the white or Dall sheep. The hunts are fair chase, the weather can be foul, but the overall scenery and grandeur of the mountains will make a sheep hunter’s heart beat with joy. All hunts are guided by Rick French, who made this DVD over the past few seasons. The final editing and production was done by Jack Brittingham’s Briar Lake Productions, a smart move as they know the hunting film business. Hunting methods vary from horseback hunts to pure backpack hunts to floating down a river with a inflatable dinghy to reach remote sheep country. In all, 11 hunts are featured including a few rams that reach the magical 40-inch mark. If you want to know what it is like to hunt a Dall sheep in Alaska this is the DVD for you; in addition the hunting scenes shown are entertaining.
Our only criticism, and it is not a major one, is that the final “bonus” chapter on how to field judge is not very comprehensive and lacks substance. In general it is a good, well-paced DVD that sheep hunters will like.
